that what everything mitt romney could have wanted to get out of that debate, he got out of this debate and if he has gotten his potential supporters more enthusiastic about going out to the polls and that's what this reflects, that's very good for mitt romney. >> so, cornell, jump in with the difference between likely voters and registered voters, there is a difference in the wording. he's leading over, romney's leading overall in this survey among the likely voters. gallup also out today though with a poll among registered voters and that's different. that has a poll where we see obama leading by five points, so walk me through it. is there such a big difference, when i get that phone call, i'm probably hearing my kid screaming in the background, so i won't hear the difference. what is the difference? >> i love that we're getting in the weeds of polling now. there's a couple of things. each polling sort of public polling has their own art and science to likely voting and it is pretty much an art as it is a science a. lot of people had the art wrong going into the late primaries. that'

coming off the debate and the pew poll you now can make the case that mitt romney is the guy who is kind of the energy and enthusiasm candidate. i think some polls will come out in places like ohio, virginia, north carolina, florida, hopefully some independent polls in the next few days that i think will get the measure of how much bounce mitt romney got. if those polls suggest him really closing the margin in those states then i think the romney campaign is really on to something. national polling is great and they're happy to have it, but really the problem they have had in the last six weeks, two months, is electoral vote in the swing states. they need those numbers to move. >> and we are going to have our nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist polls in florida, ohio, and virginia coming out first thing thursday morning. mark you're in chicago, which tells me you've probably been doing a lot of reporting. what are they saying at the obama headquarters? >> well, andrea, i came straight here from the headquarters where i sat down with some of the top officials on the campaign and talked

the reason romney is going to keep doing very well in the debates is because you never get to see him. the media tells us, you know, gives us snippets, paraphrase, in other words what he was trying to say is. let's see what he said. >> sean: if you want to look at polls -- we're still 29 days out. four weeks in a campaign we all agree is an eternity, but pew, battleground, politico, rasmussen. it goes deeper than that. romney is up in florida in a poll, up in virginia in a poll. >> even in ohio. >> sean: dead even in ohio. it's a two-point race in pennsylvania. it's a two-point -- >> well -- >> sean: wait a minute. it's a one-point race in wisconsin. this now is putting obama in a position where he has to defend, defend, defend, defend, defend, at least, you know, six, seven states that he won back in 2008. >> this is all being carried on mitt romney's performance. i'm telling you as a campaign they're still with a behind the curve, but let me tell you about those polls. the battleground poll, most of it was conducted before the debate. i'm sorry with pew, i thought pew's numbers were

in the romney debate senator ted kennedy back in 1994. yeah, you're right. we've seen some reporting on this that, you know, mitt romney is doing a lot of preparation on this for this debate. maybe focussing on zingers and one-liners, and also the campaign says what mitt romney really wants to do on wednesday night where the two candidates showed down and show that choice between what mitt romney would do in the white house over the next four years or what president obama would do if re-elected. >> poeshltyly. nine out of the ten key battleground states. now romney has actually -- he has debated almost 20 times in the primary season. how does he actually change people's impression of him? particularly his likability factor. >> and we've seen that he has a little bit of a deficit, yovrl, when it comes to likability, when it comes to his favorable and unfavorable numbers compared to the president in a lot of these polls. yeah, i think part of -- a little bit of what he is going to try to do is show more of the human face, and we've seen him try to do that on t
